However, thanks to DNA testing, this is no longer true. By getting tested at a laboratory accredited by the American Association of Blood Banks (AABB), visa applicants can prove their paternal, maternal, full-siblingship, or half-siblingship relation to their family in the states. Only one question: How exactly do they do it? You can find out more about the process below.
First, the petitioner will select an AABB accredited laboratory to use to collect the DNA samples, then make an appointment at the decided laboratory. The decision of the lab and the time should be decided by the petitioner, with no intervention of a third party.
At the appointment made, the petitioner will submit a DNA sample via cheek swab. The sample will then be sent from the collection site or clinic, to the main testing site. The petitioner shouldn’t receive a DNA test kit, for themselves or for their relative, under any circumstances. The selected testing site will send the needed kit to the petitioner’s relative
Once the petitioner’s DNA is collected and the U.S. Embassy or Consulate receives a DNA testing kit, the visa applicant will be contacted by said Embassy to make an appointment to come to the them. Before the visa applicant can go to the appointment, they must make an arrangement to pay the physician that will be collecting their DNA. Once the fee is paid, the applicant will receive a receipt that they will bring to their appointment at the Embassy or Consulate. If the receipt is not presented at the consulate, then the appointment will have to be rescheduled. If the appointment is made and the receipt is presented, then the visa applicant will go to the U.S. Embassy or Consulate with three things:
During the collection, Embassy or Consulate officers will witness the process and manage it. Once the DNA is collected (via cheek swab), the test kit will be sent back to the AABB accredited test site in the U.S. It will not, under any circumstances, be sent to any other party.
Once the DNA analysis is complete, the U.S. Embassy or Consulate will contact the visa applicant so that they may continue processing the application until a conclusion is drawn. Although the visa applicant submitted to DNA testing, a visa is not guaranteed to them simply because they tested.
